The vastness of the Australian continent has haunted Europeans ever since we set foot in it. I am similarly challenged . By the unforgiving heat, the shimmering tyranny of its distances, the harshness of its light, its otherness. As I turn towards the centre what do I see? What do I feel? Away from the coast and its Arcadian promise, the glittering skylines, the apparent emptiness looms; dumbly, questioning. What answers can I supply? What use are they out here? This work is an attempt to convey something of the tension between this landscape and the violence that we as colonists have inflicted upon it, and which it in turn threatens to inflict upon us.
